quordle game modes Explained
Six ways to play the same four-board game. Each one changes exactly one or two things. Guess count, board visibility, who picks your opener, or how long the puzzle stays live.
Pick a mode below, or answer four short questions and let the selector find one for you. For rules and tile colors from zero, our how to play Quordle page covers the basics this page assumes.
Every mode, at a glance
The short description in each row is the game’s own wording from its mode selector, quoted exactly.
| Mode | In the game’s own words | Resets |
|---|---|---|
| Classic | “9 guesses to solve 4 words” | Daily |
| Sequence | “Solve one word at a time” | Daily |
| Chill | “12 guesses, fewer unusual words” | Daily |
| Extreme | “8 guesses, more unusual words” | Daily |
| Rescue | “Fix the mess the computer made” | Daily |
| Weekly Challenge | “Unlock by solving a Daily Classic puzzle” | Weekly |
One gap worth naming. The selector gives a guess number for Classic, Chill and Extreme, but not for Sequence, Rescue or Weekly Challenge. Checked across many dates: Sequence sits at 10 guesses, Rescue at 7 for the player, Weekly Challenge at 9. Well corroborated, just not printed in the short selector text itself.
How each mode works
Classic
Nine guesses, all four boards visible from the start, you choose both openers. Everything else on this page is measured against this baseline. Play today's Classic.
Sequence
Ten guesses, but only one board is visible at a time. Solving it unlocks the next. You are paid an extra guess for playing three boards blind. Play today's Sequence.
Chill
Twelve guesses, the largest budget of any mode, and words drawn from common everyday vocabulary. Play today's Chill.
Extreme
Eight guesses, one fewer than Classic, and words pulled from a less common pool. The tightest budget of any daily mode. Play today's Extreme.
Rescue
Nine guesses total, but the first two are already typed in for you before you arrive. You get the remaining seven to finish what the opening pair started. Play today's Rescue.
Weekly Challenge
Nine guesses, standard rules, but the same four words hold from Monday through Sunday instead of resetting the next day. Open the Weekly Challenge.
Five ways the modes actually differ
"Easy" and "hard" flattens six actually different mechanics into one word. Here is what each mode actually changes, ranked on its own axis rather than squeezed into a single score.
Twelve guesses in Chill against eight in Extreme. The one dimension every competitor already gets right.
Every mode except Sequence shows all four boards immediately. Sequence is the only one where information itself is rationed, not just guesses.
Every mode except Rescue lets you choose both opening guesses. Rescue hands that choice to the game before you arrive.
The game's own wording draws this line explicitly for these two modes only. Classic, Sequence, Rescue and Weekly Challenge don't advertise a difference here.
Every mode except Weekly Challenge is open the moment you land on it. Weekly Challenge is the only one with a condition attached.
Unlocking the Weekly Challenge
The exact wording, worth reading closely
The game's own condition reads "Unlock by solving a Daily Classic puzzle." Not "today's." Just "a" Daily Classic puzzle.
That wording matters. It doesn't say the win has to come from the current day. If your first instinct is to assume you're locked out until you beat today's specific Classic, it isn't. The condition is looser than that.
If today's Classic is giving you trouble, try solving any other recent Classic puzzle first. That's a reasonable route before assuming you're stuck. We can't verify every detail of how the unlock is tracked behind the scenes. Treat this as a strong lead based on the game's own language, not a guarantee.
How the mode family grew
Four launches over roughly four years. Each one adds a different kind of pressure, not just more of the same one.
2022
Classic and Sequence. The original format, and the first twist on it: hidden boards instead of a shorter budget.
2023
Weekly Challenge. The first mode to change access instead of mechanics, gated behind a win.
2024
Chill and Extreme, launched together. The guess-count and vocabulary dial, in both directions at once.
2025
Rescue. The newest mode, and the first to take opener control away from the player entirely.
Settings worth knowing about
None of these change any rule on this page. They change how comfortable the six modes above are to actually read.
Dark appearance
Dims the surrounding interface without changing tile feedback colors.
Colorblind-friendly tiles
Swaps the standard green and yellow for a higher-contrast pair.
Key layout
An option to swap Enter and Backspace to match your usual habit.
A sensible order to try them in
There's no single correct progression, since it depends on what already feels easy. But if you've only played Classic, this order avoids the two most common frustration points.
Start with Chill if Classic still feels tight. The extra three guesses and the more familiar words let you practice reading four boards at once. The clock isn't working against you here.
Move to Extreme or Rescue once Classic feels routine. They tighten the game in two different ways. Fewer guesses against harder words in Extreme, no say in your opener in Rescue. Trying both tells you which pressure suits you.
Try Sequence whenever you want a different shape of puzzle rather than a harder version of the same one. It's the only mode where the challenge is about missing information, not guess count. Our Quordle strategy guide and best starting words page both apply across every mode above. The tile logic never changes, only the budget around it.
Questions players ask
How many Quordle modes are there?
Six: Classic, Chill, Extreme, Sequence, Rescue, and Weekly Challenge. Practice is also available as an unlimited, no-pressure way to play any time.
Which Quordle mode is hardest?
By guess count alone, Extreme, at eight. But Rescue and Sequence are hard in ways a guess count doesn't capture, losing opener control and losing board visibility.
Which Quordle mode is easiest?
Chill, by a clear margin. Twelve guesses is the largest budget of any mode, and its words are drawn from common vocabulary.
How many guesses does Quordle Sequence give you?
Ten. The game's own mode selector doesn't print a number for Sequence. Independently documented gameplay across many dates consistently confirms ten.
Do I have to solve today's Classic to unlock Weekly Challenge?
The game's exact wording says "a Daily Classic puzzle," not today's specifically. That phrasing suggests more flexibility than most guides assume.
Is Practice mode the same as any of the six main modes?
No. Practice is unlimited, on-demand play with no fixed daily puzzle, separate from the six dated modes on this page.
Do all modes use the same word list?
No. Chill and Extreme explicitly draw from different vocabulary tiers. The other modes don't state a difference here.
