Quordle Extreme Today: Hints and Answers
Extreme mode leaves all four boards in view. What it takes away is a guess and an easy word list. You get eight guesses instead of nine, and the answers come from less common words.
Open the hints below one step at a time. The four answers can be revealed in any order, because no board is locked here. For the standard nine guess game, play Quordle instead.
This is the quordle.uk daily Extreme puzzle, generated on our own schedule and word pool. It is not a copy of another site’s daily set. Every date always produces the same four words here.
01How Extreme mode works
All four boards are visible from the start. Nothing is hidden or locked behind another board. That part is identical to the standard daily puzzle.
You get eight guesses rather than nine. Every guess still applies to all four boards at once. Tiles work the usual way. Green means right letter, right spot. Yellow means right letter, wrong spot. Gray means no match.
The one other change is vocabulary. The four words come from a pool of less common English words. If the basic rules are still new, they sit on our how to play Quordle page.
02The real cost of one fewer guess
Losing one guess out of nine sounds like an eleven percent cut. In practice it is worse, and the reason is where the guess comes from.
Your first two guesses are overhead. They exist to cover common letters across all four boards, and they rarely solve anything on their own. Skipping them costs more than it saves. So the guess you lose comes out of what is left after the openers.
Closing guesses, after two openers
That is a fourteen percent cut in the guesses you actually solve with. It works out to 1.5 closing guesses per board, against 1.75 in the standard game.
The word pool pushes in the same direction. Our Extreme list is built from the tier of five letter words sitting just below our standard pool. Both are drawn from a frequency ranked word list. Real words, simply used less often in everyday English.
The clearest difference between our two pools is not rare letters. Q, X and Z turn up about as often in both. It is repeated letters, and that matters more than it first appears.
Words that repeat a letter, our pools
A double letter fills two tiles while teaching you one new letter. With six closing guesses, that trade is expensive.
03Where your eight guesses should go
Start with two openers carrying ten different letters. Cover as many vowels and common consonants as you can. This is the step players cut when they feel short on guesses, and cutting it usually costs two more later.
That leaves six guesses for four boards. The moment a board narrows to one or two candidates, commit to it. A guess spread thinly across boards that are all still open buys very little this late.
Watch the repeated letter hint above more closely than you would in the standard game. Given how this pool leans, a yes there should change your shortlist. If a board still has several candidates, the Quordle solver will rank them. Our best starting words for Quordle covers openers built for coverage.
04How the three daily modes compare
Each mode is hard in a different way. Knowing which pressure you are under changes how you should open.
Standard
9
guesses
All four boards visible. Common words. The baseline everything else is measured against.
Sequence
10
guesses
One board at a time. An extra guess, but you open partly blind.
Extreme
8
guesses
Everything visible, fewer guesses, harder words. Pressure comes from the clock, not the fog.
Sequence and Extreme sit at opposite ends. One hides information and pays you a guess for it. The other shows everything and charges you a guess. Today's set is on our Quordle Sequence today page.
05Mistakes that end a run early
The first is playing Extreme exactly like the standard puzzle. Nine guesses forgives one wasted turn. Eight does not, and the gap shows up on the fourth board.
The second is distrusting a strange looking word. This pool leans on words that are real but uncommon. Confirmed greens and yellows beat instinct every time.
The third is guessing a word you already know is wrong just to test letters, late in the game. Early on that trade is fine. With two guesses left it is how runs end one letter short.
06Questions players ask
How many guesses do you get in Extreme mode?
Eight. The standard daily puzzle gives you nine. Extreme also draws its four words from a harder, less common pool.
Are all four boards visible from the start?
Yes. Nothing is hidden or locked. That part of Extreme is identical to the standard daily game.
Are the words really harder, or does it just feel that way?
They are less common words, not longer or stranger ones. In our own pools the biggest measurable gap is repeated letters, at 29 percent against 36 percent.
Is Extreme harder than Sequence mode?
They are hard in opposite ways. Sequence hides three boards and gives you an extra guess. Extreme shows everything and takes one away.
What happens if I run out of guesses?
The run ends and any unsolved boards stay unsolved. A new Extreme set appears the next day.
Can I replay the same day's Extreme puzzle?
No. Each date has one Extreme set here, and the words for a date never change.
When does the puzzle change?
At midnight in your own time zone. Someone in another country can already be a day ahead of you. Answer pages will not always match what you see.
Are these the same words as the standard daily puzzle?
No. Extreme runs on its own schedule and its own word pool here. The four words differ from the standard daily set.
