STARTING WORDS

Best Quordle Starting Words

Quordle openers serve a different purpose than Wordle openers. In Wordle you narrow down one word. In Quordle you need useful feedback across four boards at once. The best starting words test common vowels and consonants with zero repeated letters.

If the rules still feel new, read the how to play Quordle guide first.

QUICK ANSWER
Style Words Letters tested Best for
Best single opener SLATE 5 Speed and flexibility
Best two-word pair CRANE + SLOTH 10 Balanced coverage
Best all-vowel pair RAISE + CLOUT 10 Finding all five vowels
Best triplet CRANE, PILOT, MUSHY 15 Consistent daily wins
Data-backed triplet CHIMP, ROBED, SLANT 15 Maximum word separation
Beginner triplet CRANE, SPOIL, THUMB 15 Easy to remember
Four-word safety STARE, BLINK, CHOMP, FUDGY 20 Practice and streaks

Every word in a sequence should introduce new letters. If two openers share letters, the second guess wastes slots.

THE BUDGET

The Guess Budget

Classic Quordle gives nine guesses for four words. Every fixed opener eats a guess that could solve a board.

Fixed openers Guesses left Spare after 4 solves
184
273
362
451

Three openers leave two spare turns. Four openers leave one. A single ambiguous board can end the game at that point.

This math is why most winning players settle on two or three openers. More detail on managing guesses after the opening phase sits in the Quordle strategy guide.

FUNDAMENTALS

What Makes a Starting Word Strong

1

Letter frequency

E, A, R, S, T, O, L, I, N and C appear in the most five-letter English words. An opener loaded with these hits something on most boards. Words built from J, X, Z or Q waste your first guess.

2

Position accuracy

Letters need to sit in common positions. S at the start, E at the end, R in the second or fourth spot. An opener that places common letters in common positions produces greens, not just yellows.

3

Zero repeated letters

TEETH and GEESE test only four unique letters instead of five. Every repeat is a wasted slot. Your first three guesses should never contain a duplicate.

SINGLE OPENERS

Best Single Openers

Word Vowels Strength Limitation
SLATE2Excellent overall balanceMisses R and N
CRANE2Strong consonants and positionsMisses S and T
STARE2Tests S, T and R togetherMisses L and N
TRACE2Strong letter frequencyMisses S, L and N
RAISE3Good vowel and consonant mixOnly two consonants
AUDIO4Fast vowel detectionTests only D as consonant

SLATE edges out the others as a standalone opener. Two vowels, three high-frequency consonants. It leaves C, R, N, O, I and U available for a strong second guess.

CRANE is a close second. Both leave room for a complementary follow-up.

TWO-WORD PAIRS

Best Two-Word Pairs

A pair tests ten letters. That covers nearly 40% of the alphabet. Two openers leave seven guesses for solving.

Pair Unique letters Vowels covered Best feature
CRANE + SLOTH10A, E, OSix consonants
RAISE + CLOUT10A, E, I, O, UAll five vowels
SLATE + CURIO10A, E, I, O, UBalanced fixed routine
TRACE + SOUND10A, E, O, UStrong consonant spread
STARE + POUND10A, E, O, UCovers N and D

The second word should complement the first, not repeat it. STARE followed by RAISE repeats A, R, S and E. That pair tests only six unique letters across two guesses. Your second word should add at least four new letters.

TRIPLETS

Best Three-Word Triplets

The triplet method tests 15 unique letters. More than half the alphabet. This approach produces the most consistent win rates.

Triplet Unique letters Vowel coverage Best for
CRANE, PILOT, MUSHY15All five vowelsBest practical system
CHIMP, ROBED, SLANT15Four vowelsData-backed separation
CRANE, SPOIL, THUMB15All five vowelsEasy to remember
STARE, HOUND, MILKY15All vowels + YStreak protection
TRACE, SOUND, IMPLY15All vowels + YMemorable in order

A simulation study by Raw Data Studies examined roughly four million three-word combinations. CHIMP, ROBED, SLANT produced the smallest average candidate groups with a 53.5% simulated solve-in-seven rate. Average completion was 7.562 turns.

CRANE, PILOT, MUSHY is the triplet we see the highest win rates with from players on this site. All five vowels. Thirteen of the fifteen most common consonants.

FOUR OPENERS

Should You Use Four Openers?

STARE, BLINK, CHOMP, FUDGY covers 20 unique letters. If none happens to be an answer, you have five turns left for four boards. One spare guess total.

For most players three predetermined words should be the maximum. Use Quordle unlimited mode to test a four-word system before risking a daily streak.

MID-SEQUENCE

When to Break Your Sequence

The biggest weakness of fixed openers is that players complete the sequence even when the board says to stop.

After every opener, check: does any board have two or more green tiles? Does only one realistic answer fit? If yes, solve that board now. Continue your sequence only if several patterns remain open on every board.

After your first guess you rarely have enough to solve. After your second, one board may already show a clear answer. Playing a preset third word when you could solve a board wastes a guess you might need later.

SEQUENCE MODE

Openers for Sequence Mode

Sequence mode shows feedback on boards one and two only. Boards three and four stay hidden until the earlier ones are solved.

Use a pair instead of a triplet in Sequence. Spend two guesses gathering, solve boards one and two fast, then attack boards three and four with full feedback. Triplets are risky here because you spend three guesses while seeing results on only two boards.

More on mode-specific tactics in the game modes overview.

HARD MODE

Openers for Hard Mode

Hard mode forces you to reuse confirmed green and yellow letters on every guess. Preset pairs and triplets often break because your planned second word may ignore a confirmed letter.

Use a single opener like SLATE or CRANE. Then adapt your second guess to include every confirmed letter. Fixed sequences do not work reliably here. The hard mode guide covers this fully.

WATCH OUT

Openers to Avoid

Avoid

ADIEU

Four vowels sounds efficient. D is the only consonant. Forces your remaining openers to work around the missing A. Spreading vowels across two or three words gives better results.

Avoid

QUEUE

Tests only three unique letters. The repeated U and E waste two of your five slots.

Avoid

FUZZY

Tests rare letters on your very first guess. Save rare-letter testing for guess three, after you know what common letters are missing.

Avoid

UNIQUE

Not a valid five-letter word. It has six letters. Multiple guides recommend it anyway.

PICK YOUR STYLE

Which System Fits You

FOR

Consistency seekers

Use a triplet.

CRANE, PILOT, MUSHY gives the most reliable information spread. You solve nothing in your first three turns, but you are rarely surprised afterward.

FOR

Speed players

Use a pair.

CRANE + SLOTH gives enough in two guesses. Seven turns to solve. You might miss a board occasionally, but you had more guesses to work with.

FOR

Instinct players

Use SLATE or CRANE alone.

Read the board. Pick your second guess from the colors. Higher risk, higher reward. Requires solid Quordle strategy fundamentals.
