Quordle vs Wordle: The Real Differences
Wordle asks you to solve one five letter word in six guesses. Quordle asks you to solve four at once in nine. That sounds like a small step up. The arithmetic says otherwise.

Quordle is Wordle played on four boards at once, nine shared guesses instead of six. Per word, that works out to about 2.25 guesses in Quordle. Wordle gives a full 6. Under a third of the room. Quordle launched in February 2022, a month after Wordle was bought by The New York Times. It was built by Freddie Meyer. Merriam-Webster acquired it in January 2023.

The real math behind “harder”
Everyone says Quordle is harder. Almost nobody says by how much, in a number that actually means something. Guesses per board is that number.
Guesses allowed, per word
Six guesses on one word against nine guesses split across four. Wordle gives you two and two thirds times more room per word than Quordle does. That ratio, not the raw 6 versus 9, is the actual size of the jump.
Nobody plays Quordle by splitting guesses perfectly evenly, of course. Some boards fall in three guesses, others eat five. But the 2.25 figure sets the ceiling. Waste guesses early and there is very little slack left to recover.

How hard is each one, really
Worth knowing before you trust any number
Wordle has real, independently checked data behind its average guess count. Quordle does not. That gap gets papered over constantly.
Wordle’s numbers come from more than one source and they agree with each other. Large samples of publicly shared results, independent bot analysis, and separate social media datasets all agree. They land in the same narrow band, roughly 3.6 to 4.0 guesses, averaging close to 3.8. Three unrelated methods converging that tightly is a real signal.
Quordle has no equivalent. It tracks personal stats inside the game itself. There is no large, independently verified public dataset for average guesses, solve rate, or completion time, the way Wordle has. Any specific number you see quoted for “average Quordle guesses” is one writer’s estimate, not measured data.
That does not make Quordle easier. The guess-per-board math above already proves the format is tighter. The real answer to “how much harder” stops at the arithmetic. It does not extend to a borrowed average that was never actually measured.
When Wordle can be the harder one
Quordle is harder overall. That does not mean every single Wordle board is easy. A Wordle guess concentrates everything on one word, and some word families punish that concentration hard.
Take a board where four letters are locked in and only the first is missing: _ATCH. Real candidates include BATCH, CATCH, HATCH, LATCH, MATCH, PATCH, and WATCH. Seven live words sharing the same four fixed letters, with only six guesses total to sort them out.
In Quordle, the same trap can exist on one of the four boards. The other three guesses you are making anyway often knock out several of those seven candidates as a side effect. Wordle gives that trap nowhere to hide. That is the one place Wordle’s simplicity works against you rather than for you.
Where each game came from
Wordle came first. Josh Wardle, a Welsh software engineer, built it as a private project for his partner, Palak Shah. He released it publicly in October 2021. It went viral within months. The New York Times bought it on January 31, 2022, for an undisclosed sum reported in the low seven figures.
Quordle followed fast. Freddie Meyer built it after playing Dordle, a two-board Wordle variant made by developer Guilherme S. Töws. Meyer worked with engineer David Mah on an early prototype. The finished game launched in February 2022, about a month after the Wordle sale. It reportedly reached a million players within its first two months. Merriam-Webster acquired it in January 2023.
So the two games share a birth year and a pattern. Both started as small personal projects, then sold to an established publisher within roughly a year. Neither started as a company product.
Why practice mode is not optional in Quordle
Wordle gives you one puzzle a day and nothing to warm up on beyond that. It can afford this because the format is forgiving. Even a rough opener still leaves room to recover across six guesses on one word.
Quordle cannot afford the same thing, which is exactly why it ships with unlimited free practice and Wordle does not. Walking in cold to a 2.25-guess-per-word budget across four boards is a rough way to meet the game. Practice softens that first impression. Practice mode exists because the format actually requires it, not as a bonus feature.

Which one should you play
Stay with Wordle if
You want a two to three minute daily habit, not a session. You are still solving in three or four guesses and enjoy that pace. You want exactly one puzzle a day, no more.
Move to Quordle if
Wordle stopped feeling like a challenge. You want a puzzle that takes real thought, not a lucky guess. You are willing to lose a few games while you learn the format.
