Why S ranks unusually high here: standard Wordle deliberately avoids plural answers, so S barely ever ends a Wordle word. Our list isn’t built that way, it includes plenty of plurals, so S is a genuinely strong letter to test on quordle.uk specifically, not just a generic “common letter” claim borrowed from Wordle advice.
What “information” actually means here
Entropy, in plain language
Every possible answer word gives your candidate a different green/yellow/gray pattern. If those patterns are spread out evenly across many possible outcomes, that’s a lot of information, since seeing the result narrows things down a lot. If most answers produce nearly the same pattern, you learn less.

Serious analyses of Wordle-style games consistently find the same thing: change what you’re optimizing for, and the “best” word changes with it. A word built for maximum letter coverage isn’t the same word a pure information-theory model picks, and neither is necessarily the easiest word for a human to actually reason about mid-game.
That’s not a flaw in the research, it’s the actual shape of the problem. This tool doesn’t pretend otherwise. It shows you real coverage and overlap numbers so you can judge trade-offs yourself, instead of handing you one number and calling it the answer.
The part most guides skip
One strong word isn’t the same as a strong pair
STARE and RAISE both score well individually. Put them together and they only cover 6 unique letters combined, because they share A, E, R, and S.
STARE paired with CLOUT covers 9 unique letters instead, with no overlap at all. The second word matters as much as the first.

There isn’t a single one. It depends what you’re optimizing for. Balanced words like STARE or CRANE perform well on several common measures, but a full opening sequence matters more than any one word alone.
Should I use two or three starting words?
More openers reveal more letters but leave less room to close out boards later. See the opening budget table above for the real trade-off.
Is ADIEU a good Quordle starter?
It covers four vowels fast, but only one consonant. Strong for vowel discovery, weak on its own for consonant coverage.
Do my starting words need to avoid repeated letters?
It’s a useful default, since repeats waste a letter slot. But it isn’t a strict rule, some strong combinations still work with a repeated letter.
Is the best Wordle starting word also the best for Quordle?
